The Disability Standards for Education in the Australian Disability Discrimination Act states that every school should make necessary changes required for the students with a disability to provide them with equal opportunities. In early childhood intervention, we are preparing kids with the skills they need to be successful when they start school. When our clients start school, it is important that they have the same opportunities in all areas including social skills, group participation, access to a modified and appropriate curriculum when they need, and having a happy experience at school.
At Beanstalk Child Psychology, we work hard to ensure a smooth transition to school for your child here in Adelaide. We provide the in-class support for your child as well as professional development for your child’s school to enable the upskilling of staff and the greatest chance of success during transition and the first year of school.
The School Support Program at Beanstalk Kids is a partnership between you, the school representatives, specialised consultants and your child. The stakeholders work together to cater to the needs of your child. The purpose of this support program is to design an individualised learning plan (known as ILP / IEP / NEP) by evaluating and regularly monitoring the needs of your child. This learning plan will enable everyone to see if goals are being met, and when it’s time to set new ones.
Individual learning plan
The individual plan can be referred to differently in different states but the purpose is the same. This plan is devised to map out your child’s:
- Skills and abilities
- Learning goals to be accomplished
- Modifications to the curriculum
- Tailored strategies and resources required for skill development
- Strategies to develop your child’s social skills.
This plan is then put in motion using the principles of applied behaviour analysis, or ABA therapy as it’s often known. Beanstalk’s School Support Program will ensure that your child is having his/her best shot at learning and development in the classroom.
Integration / Classroom aides
Our Registered Behaviour Technicians are the school support staff who can assist students with their learning needs. At Beanstalk Kids, we can help your child by providing the following:
- Supporting your child in the class, to complete work on their own
- Collect data on progress towards ILP / NEP goals
- Assist teachers in the classroom with other jobs so they can work with your child
- Supervise any safety concerns
- Teacher training in behaviour analysis, and autism.
- Guidance about homework
This includes the extra support and help provided by our Program Supervisors in and out of schools. Beanstalk Kids helps in the facilitation of this professional support in Adelaide schools. We’ve presented teacher PD trainings in a number of schools and kindergartens around Adelaide.
